OSCE Secretary General praises Serbia's support for Organization's work, confirms further assistance

BELGRADE, 12 October 2007 - The OSCE Secretary General, Ambassador Marc Perrin de Brichambaut, praised today Serbia's support for the work of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and confirmed the Organization's commitment to further assist the country.
"Serbian officials have indicated their full support for the work the OSCE Mission does in Serbia," said the OSCE Secretary General at the end of his visit to Belgrade. "We discussed future co-operation in the fields of rule of law, human rights, law enforcement, democratization, media, economy and the environment."
The Secretary General met President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, the Speaker of Parliament Oliver Dulic, Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, the Minister of Environment Protection Sasa Dragin and the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Rasim Ljajic. Ambassador de Brichambaut also met with a number of Serbian civic society representatives, MPs and members of the diplomatic corps.
He exchanged views with the Serbian leadership and Mission staff on various mandate-related issues, and discussed regional stability in the context of talks on the future status of Kosovo.
Ambassador de Brichambaut underscored the importance of strengthening the role of the Serbian Parliament, adopting electoral legislation and providing for the highest standards for free and independent media.
He said that the Serbian government has contributed to improving the environment for future generations by hosting the Sixth "Environment for Europe" Ministerial Conference, which ends today in Belgrade.
