BELGRADE, 11 December 2002 - The OSCE Mission to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), in co-ordination with local authorities, will re-construct three playgrounds for children in southern Serbia before the end of the year.

The Mission and its implementing partner The Care for Children Centre will shortly begin the construction of playgrounds in central parks in Bujanovac, Presevo and Medvedja (southern Serbia). The objective of this exercise to provide children with the facilities to play together and have fun together.

"Our objective is to create and develop unique and fully accessible playgrounds that allow children of all ages in multi-ethnic societies in southern Serbia to play together," stated Acting Head of the OSCE Mission, Mark G. Davison. He said that the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child in fact demands in article 31 that all of us recognise the right of children to rest and leisure, and to engage and play.

The OSCE Mission to the FRY is also putting plans in place to re-construct other playgrounds throughout Serbia in 2003.
