Interpretative Guidance on the notion of Direct participation in hostilities under international humanitarian law

A clear distinction between armed forces and civilians is a key element of international humanitarian law. In contemporary conflict, however, the proximity of civilians to military operations and their increased involvement in military activities lead to confusion regarding the principle of distinction. Aim of these guidelines is to provide guidance on the interpretation of international humanitarian law relating to the concept of direct participation in hostilities.
