Protection of Journalistic Sources in the Digital Environment: Law and Media Practice “Pretending to live normally”

The study “Protection of Journalistic Sources in the Digital Environment: Law and Media Practice “Pretending to live normally” aims to examine, understand, and recommend measures and policies for the preservation and strengthening of normative and institutional practices for the protection of journalistic sources or journalistic privilege, which guarantee the freedom of information and directly contribute to the media pluralism principle. 

Based on the desktop research and interviews with journalists, the study examines the social context, media system of Serbia, importance of journalistic source protection. It provides the findings of the research (digital tools, broader context of pressures on independent media, how internal capacities are built) as well as the analysis of the legal framework of journalistic sources protection (normative framework and comparative legal solutions, international standards and EU regulation). 

In addition to the conclusions, the study also provides a set of recommendations representing a possible roadmap towards strengthening the legal and institutional protection of journalistic sources.  The publication is available in Serbian language.
