Role of Civil Society in Democratic Control of Armed Forces and Security Sector Reform in Serbia to be discussed

BELGRADE, 17 February 2005 - A two-day discussion on the Role of Civil Society in Security Sector Reform and Democratic Control of Armed Forces, organized by the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro and the Centre for Civilian-Military Relations, will start tomorrow in Kanjiza.

50 participants from NGOs, electronic and written media, university, parliaments and governments will examine ways of strengthening co-operation between the non-governmental and governmental sectors on security-related issues and stimulate a more efficient use of available domestic resources.

The Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro, Ambassador Maurizio Massari, and the President of the Centre for Civil and Military Relations, Miroslav Hadzic, will open the event.

The discussion will be held within the Programme for Strengthening Parliamentary Oversight on Defence and Security Sectors run by the OSCE Mission and supported by the British Ministry of Defence for over two years.

Media representatives are invited to attend the opening session which will take place in Hotel Lupus in Kanjiza from 10:00 to 10:30 on Friday.
